
Congrats to Bloomfield Adult Education student Gladys Rivera Vidal. Our Adult Ed courses helped her to passed all requirements for U.S. Citizenship, as established by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
She will participate in a new-citizens swearing-in ceremony at the Federal Building in Hartford at the end of November. Ms. Rivera is married with two children ages 10 and 7. She and her husband, Jorge Vega, are originally from Ecuador and have been living in Connecticut for 10 years.
In addition to academic courses, Bloomfield Adult Ed provides U.S. Citizenship preparation classes, running 10 weeks in the fall and spring. These include lesson in basics Civics, along with coaching on how to prepare for the citizenship interview.


Last public meeting last night for two stalwarts on the Bloomfield Board of Education. Donald Harris is retiring after 12 years as chairman. Robert Ike is retiring after 16 consecutive years on the board, 20 overall.
Both were given chairs last night in appreciation of their service.

On Friday, 10/20, Laurel Literacy Academy will have a pep rally to celebrate TEAMWORK!!! Students are encouraged to wear their favorite personal or team jersey to celebrate teamwork. Our pep rally will have a few BHS football players and cheerleaders coming to inspire our future BHS students and athletes! They will do a cheer, share experiences about teamwork, and discuss why it’s important with our Owlets.
Please remember to give your child $1 for Dress Down (or out of uniform) on Fridays.

Christopher Prescott, former program director for the Capital Region Education Council, has been hired to be Bloomfield Public Schools’ new School to Career Specialist. He starts tomorrow, Oct. 17.
Mr. Prescott is a passionate youth advocate and mentor. He is also a former overseas professional basketball play who founded M-Pact Mentoring Inc., which provides mentoring and development programs for youth.
In his new job, Mr. Prescott will be counseling middle and high school students in developing success plans that guide them from middle school to senior year in high school and beyond. He will also organize career-development workshops.


A community forum on domestic abuse is being hosted today, Oct. 16, by the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the town's community center, 330 Park Ave. Attendees will learn how to spot signs of domestic abuse and how to help - including available resources. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence is seeing more domestic violence cases this year, including more cases of family violence involving children.


A group of Global Experience Magnet School students recently won 1st place in a business competition, hosted by SuitUP, a non-profit organization that offers students the opportunity to see what it’s like to work in a a corporate environment.
For this competition, students Caden Jolly, Ayla Green and Daylin McKim traveled to New York City to work at the corporate offices of Kearney, a global management consulting firm.
The students pitched to the judges of Kearney employees their idea of “Swish Juice”, a vending machine that allows customers to mix and match juices to make unique flavors.
GEMS plans to continue its relationship with SuitUp and provide more students with opportunities to experience the corporate world and engage in business-related competitions.

This year, the BHS Athletic Department will focus on a mental health initiative as it relates to good sportsmanship and being a positive role model.

Friends, family, fraternity brothers and colleagues say farewell and thank you to BOE chairman Donald Harris, Jr. (center, with wife Dr. Martha Brackeen-Harris) and BOE member Robert Ike (checkered suit). Both are retiring from the board and served the town, with distinction, for more that a decade on the board. Tuesday was their last public BOE meeting.
