Principal's Welcome Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to our 2023-2024 school year at Laurel!! For our returning families, did you
notice something a little different about our mascot? Laurel Elementary School has
been planning a transition to Laurel Literacy Academy! We are so excited to kick off
our new school year with a renewed commitment to literacy. Over the past several
years, the Laurel staff has worked diligently to provide the best learning experiences to
our little learners. We have used research and best practices to formulate active
learning scenarios that build foundational skills for reading and writing. Our next stage
in development is to intentionally infuse those practices throughout daily learning
opportunities. For example, we will use hallway transitions as a way to practice
phonemic awareness and having whole school reading contest to increase the number
of books read by our young owlets. Our full transition will take place over the next
three years as we focus on expanding staff professional development and increasing
parent partnership. Rest assured, we will continue to remain focused on all subjects
including math and applying the tenants of active learning and cognitive participation
to our daily lessons.

When you come to Laurel Literacy Academy to visit to may see our sight words painted
on the ground, a reading nook at recess when students need a break, or walking stories
posted around our recess area. These are just a couple of ways that we are infusing
literacy throughout our day. Please stay tuned to more information at our Open House.
We encourage active family participation and invite you to be an active member in the
Laurel school experience. I know that our partnership is our greatest strength and for
that I am thankful. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out
to me.

Wishing Everyone a Safe and Healthy School Year!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Dwyer
