Principal's Message

October 2018

I would like to welcome all of you to our Laurel Elementary School website.   If this is your child’s first year at our school, please take some time to review our Parent Handbook.  If your child attended our school last year, please review the new pick up and drop off changes in the Parent Handbook.

We have lots of exciting activities during the month of October.  We have a WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) pizza dinner coming up on Tuesday October 2 from 6:00PM-7:00 p.m. in our cafeteria.  Over 80 fathers and grandfathers attended last year.  We were thrilled with the participation of our dads!  We ask our fathers to volunteer as a WATCH DOG one day in our school.  We keep them busy by having them work bus duty, patrol the parking lot and hallways, work in the classrooms, cafeteria and recess.  Your child will remember this day for the rest of their lives!  Please call our school (860) 286-2675 and speak to Rita Wood if you are interested in volunteering as a WATCH D.O.G.

Another exciting event will be our “Career Day”.  All of our students study the community during their social studies lessons.  We are once again planning to have our Bloomfield community members visit our school on October 26, 2018 and speak to our students about their careers (police, firefighters, mail carriers, lawyers, doctors…).   We are asking for our students to dress up in the career that they would like to be in when they grow up.  Ms. Darby, our librarian will display the career books for students to read when they visit the library.  If you would like to participate in this event, please call our school and speak to Mr. Guzzo.

The Laurel PTO has done an amazing job providing workshops to our parents.  This year we look forward to Family Literacy and Family Math Nights.  The Laurel PTO always sponsors the special programs for our students (PTO Carnival, T-Bone Concert, Zumba, and various positive behavior support PBS assemblies).

The October meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 from 6:00-7:00PM.  We will meet in the Laurel Cafeteria.  We vote for our Laurel PTO Officers and make a plan for the PTO meetings this school year.

All Grade 2 students have an extended year this school year.  Students in grade 2 will take part in a STEAM {Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math} program with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hartford from 3:45-4:30pm.  The students are engaged in hands on activities such as science experiments, computers, LEGOS, plays, and board games like checkers and chess.

Finally, I would like to thank all our wonderful parents are guardians.  We are off to a smooth start to the 2018-2019 school year.  Our students are learning the school rules {Respect, Responsibility, and Self Control}.  They are busy learning how to become better readers, writers and mathematicians.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at Laurel-860-286-2675.
